Natural gas is an efficient and cleaner way to heat your home and water. Follow these Home Safety Tips from Enbridge Gas Inc. for staying safe all year round:
- Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home—install at least one near the sleeping area and on each floor. Remember to test them monthly.
- Have your natural gas appliances/equipment serviced and maintained by a TSSA registered heating contractor yearly.
- Keep your fireplace clean and free of obstructions.
- Make sure you know where the main natural gas shut-off valve is located and how to use it. You may need to store a screwdriver or wrench nearby to use in an emergency.
- For a natural gas or carbon monoxide emergency. Go outside immediately, and call 911 or your local gas emergency number if you smell rotten eggs and suspect a leak.
Keep your meter and outside vents clear of any built-ups. A natural gas meter covered in snow and overgrown plants can be a hazard. Always trim the surrounding brushes & clear any snow/ice build-up from your meter. Keeping your natural gas meter and appliance exhaust vents clear is important to make sure your meter is not damaged and to prevent an appliance malfunction. If the vent is covered by overgrown bushes, bird's nests, and/or snow, it may cause a buildup of carbon monoxide (CO) in the home when the CO cannot be released through the vent outside.
